The Children's Foundation

The Children’s Foundation was set up as a charity in 1990 in Newcastle upon Tyne. At that period in time the North East region had the worst child health levels in the country, therefore we exist to improve the health and wellbeing of the children and young people affected

Our ‘Yellow Brick Road Appeal’ raised £12M to build The Sir James Spence Institute of Child Health, a home for research into childhood ill –health, a building we gifted to the NHS.  In return we were provided with office space within the building. So, while we have NHS emails it’s important to stress that The Children’s Foundation does not receive any statutory funding at all. Today we continue to improve the health and well-being of the most vulnerable and marginalised children and young people from birth to 18 in the North East by Making Serious Stuff Fun!

  • Mission: Supporting the up’s and down’s of childhood within their community, laying a foundation of resilience to enable children to thrive.
  • Our overall aim: That North East Children and young people are happy and healthy and that they feel loved, respected, are given a voice and are heard.
  • Objectives (how we are achieving the above):
  • Within Child Health Establishments – The Clown Doctors, Story Chair, Children’s Garden
  • Within communities – Therapeutic Horticulture, Development and delivery of Fuzzy Subjects & Nurture Project. Clown Doctors in Hospices & Baby Singing.
